The best destinations for your first time sailing

What are the best destinations for a first sailing experience?

A sailing vacation is one of those experiences that should be had at least once in a lifetime. If you have never tried it, you will surely have numerous questions and perplexities, first of all: which destination do I choose?

Often the most enjoyable thing about a sailing cruise is precisely the sense of adventure one gets when visiting a destination for the first time. It may be the peace of a quaint harbor in the Aeolian Islands, the natural beauty of a marine park in Croatia, or an encounter with a pod of dolphins during a crossing to Corsica. Wherever you choose to sail, out there is full of beauty, passion, and life.

If you have never been on a boat and this is your first time, you will surely want to choose a destination that guarantees calm waters, light winds and favorable sailing conditions, perhaps opting for a few days' experience. In fact, the weekend is the best way to approach sailing and test yourself in preparation for a longer vacation.

In this article you will find useful tips to guide you in choosing a destination and pointers on the best areas for your first experience.

The best destinations for your first sailing experience

French Riviera

French Riviera

Very close to Italy, the French Riviera is also the perfect destination to enjoy a relaxing weekend and approach the world of sailing. Passing through Menton, Antibes, Cannes until you reach Saint Tropez, this area also offers ideal sailing conditions for a first experience: short stretches of quiet sailing below the coast and several well-stocked ports in which to dock in case of need.

Balearic Islands

Balearic Islands

The coastal waters of the Balearic Islands (Majorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera), are the perfect destination for your first sailing vacation. From May to September, the weather is beautiful and the sea and wind are definitely favorable. This makes the islands an ideal destination even for beginners who want to learn to sail.

If you have one week you can focus on Ibiza and Formentera, or Majorca and Menorca; if you have two weeks you will be able to touch all four.

From the deck of your boat, you can explore the pristine coves of Menorca, swim in the turquoise waters of Formentera and spend the evening in one of the picturesque towns between Ibiza and Majorca. The islands also have so much to offer on the mainland; in fact, you can arrange excursions to discover the local nature, culture, and gastronomy.

Croatia

Croatia

Croatia has long been a favorite sailing destination for beginners and experienced sailors alike. It offers perfect sailing conditions thanks to a mild Mediterranean climate and excellent wind conditions that keep the sea always calm. For first-time sailors, the Kornati Islands area is especially recommended. The presence of numerous islands within a short distance of each other allows for immediate sheltering and less sea even if the wind picks up. The cons of these islands is that they are mostly uninhabited, so with the exception of Zadar and a few others, you will not find marinas in which to dock and small towns to visit for your shore excursions. In any case, for those who have never been by boat, it is not recommended to reach this area by embarking from the Italian coast, because the crossing involves about 12 hours of sailing.

The area of Istria is also particularly recommended for those new to the area, especially families with children, as it is easily accessible from Italy even by car and therefore also suitable for experiences lasting less than a week. Compared to the Kornati, you will find more ports to dock in this area.

Greece

Greece

Sailing off the Greek coast can be summed up simply: clear seas, steady winds and beautiful surroundings rich in history. Although sailing in Greece is generally reserved for more experienced sailors, there are many areas where the sea is calmer and where beginners can sail without particular problems. These are the Ionian Islands, particularly between Corfu and the Greek coast in the northwest and the area between Lefkada and Zakynthos further south.

In general, May, June and September offer perfect conditions; July and August are warmer and windier, especially in the Cyclades where the Meltemi blows.

For those looking for a vacation between relaxation and nightlife, you will be spoiled for choice between Corfu and Zakynthos.

An unforgettable experience that you will do again (many) times!

Items to consider when choosing a destination for your first sailing vacation

  1. 1

    Easily accessible destinations

Opt for easily accessible embarkation ports. For those who are new to sailing, having to make a long trip, in which they may have to change several vehicles just to reach the embarkation point, can be stressful.

  2. 2

    Quiet sea

Choose sailing areas that provide sheltered bays in which to anchor in rough seas.

  3. 3

    Short navigations

Avoid itineraries that involve long day or night crossings. If you have never been on a boat and do not know whether or not you may be seasick, facing a crossing can be very challenging.

  4. 4

    Light winds

Do not choose sailing areas with strong winds. The presence of wind is essential for a sailing vacation, but if excessive it risks making sailing unpleasant for those who are not used to it.

  5. 5

    Ports and marinas

Select sailing areas that offer ports in which to dock. This is especially important for week-long experiences, during which you may need to moor in a marina with facilities where you can refuel. Spending the night in the roadstead certainly has its appeal, but docking at the port provides some added amenities.

  6. 6

    Weather

he last but not least, it is essential to keep an eye on the weather and sea conditions at all times. In all destinations, conditions can change from one moment to the next, and the sea is always unpredictable
