This experience, in a nutshell
Located on the southern side of the gulf, opposite Athens, the islands of the Saronic Gulf allow you to immerse yourself in the island reality, despite being a short distance from the capital. Like all the islands of Greece, each has its own atmosphere and culture, which allows you to range between archaeological sites, seaside resorts and escapes into nature.
This itinerary, which we will travel in the low season, is perfect for a holiday that combines the pleasure of traveling by boat enjoying the first sea after the winter break and the desire to immerse yourself in Greek history and culture, exploring islands, bays and places of great interest, which in high season would be super crowded.
With the huge city of Athens as a backdrop, we will visit islands that are all different and beautiful, each with its own grace and history; The navigation is not demanding and the distances are short, which leaves us time for a first swim and to relax in some wonderful rooms. bay and at the same time to visit the islands and villages of the archipelago.
Aegina is famous for the Doric temple dedicated to the local goddess Aphaia , The port is lively and on weekends Athenians fleeing the hustle and bustle of the city mingle with the lively community of islanders. In Aegina a delicious pistachio is produced and consumed, exported throughout Europe. Nearby Angistri is an oasis of peace and tranquility in the low season. Poros is separated from the mountainous territory of the Peloponnese by a narrow channel, a protected position that makes Poros city resemble a lake resort. The pastel-colored houses are arranged along the slopes of a hill, dominated by a clock tower and create a picturesque picture. The island thus boasts a characteristic town and a wooded and lush hinterland. Hydra is a beautiful island without motor vehicles: you will not find cars or scooters in Hydra, but only paved alleys with marble bowls, donkeys, rocks and the sea. It is considered the gem of the archipelago, it has attracted illustrious artists over the years, including Sophia Loren and Leonard Coen. Its stone houses, restored with great care, dominate the picturesque harbor, rich in history. The movements of heavy loads are entrusted to mules, which together with the mountainous and rugged nature give the island two faces, one chic and one rustic.
We will tour the islands allowing ourselves the pleasure of visiting the villages and the hinterland, enjoying the privilege of moving by boat.
Once the muscles have warmed up, the grand finale: a beautiful sail to Cape Sounion, where the Temple of Poseidon stands. A monument full of symbolism: Myth has it that here Aegeus, King of Athens, threw himself into the sea believing his son Theseus to be dead in the challenge against the Minotaur. And the sea still bears his name. By connecting the Parthenon, the Temple of Neptune and the Temple of Aegina, an equilateral triangle is obtained, a marvel of Attica admired from antiquity to the present.
