The sailing and manoeuvring course is designed for those who want to perfect their sailing technique and daily manoeuvres, both in port and at sea and improve their skills in anchoring at anchor, to safely manage the most delicate operations in port traffic contexts or in crowded areas.

What you will learn

You will learn to control the speed and direction of the boat, dealing with the difficulties that can arise when sailing in confined spaces. You will learn the importance of keeping the weather conditions under control and studying the anchorage area well. You will learn how to anchor under sail, without the use of the engine.

You will learn how to use the engine with precision to maneuver in crowded environments, such as marinas or harbors, while maintaining control over the boat even in difficult conditions.

You will learn how to react quickly in case of difficulties, such as a problematic approach to the quay, unmooring in high wind conditions, or managing a man overboard recovery.

Topics covered

• Adjusting the sails – You will learn the correct setting of the sails according to the conditions of -wind and waves. We will use jib, mainsail and code-zero.
• Manoeuvres in port – During the course, you will gain the skills necessary to perform manoeuvres in confined spaces with the engine, such as approaching the quay, docking and unmooring.
• Motor anchor – You will choose the most suitable anchor area and how to position the boat correctly before dropping anchor.
• Sailing anchorage – By using the wind and sails, you will be able to handle the boat in a way that maintains a stable position before dropping anchor. You will also make sailing departures always without the use of the engine.
• Controlling the boat in tight spaces – Navigation in port requires the ability to maneuver the boat in tight spaces, where the traffic of other boats and the presence of obstacles can make operations more complex. Exercising in tight spaces will give you the confidence you need to face any situation in port.
• Emergency management – In addition to routine maneuvers, the course will prepare you to deal with emergency situations during maneuvers. Safety is a priority at every stage of navigation and it will be essential to acquire the right skills to deal with the unexpected calmly and decisively.
