Let's find it together! You love the sea, beautiful beaches, and nature? Then it's time to discover Croatia in a unique way! One of the best sailing regions to start with is Croatia, this is because the sailing areas of the country are suitable for both experienced sailors and beginners - both of which can enjoy sailing at their ability and be captivated by the area’s natural beauty. If you are planning a sailing trip in Croatia, you should keep an eye on the sailing areas in northern Dalmatia. The Kornati archipelago - and its many islands - attracts sailors from all over the world, year after year.
Sailing around the Kornati Islands is so popular because of its special landscape, which resembles a lunar landscape. The barren rocks in combination with turquoise blue water and green olive groves form a very unique backdrop. As the Kornati are a protected area, they are largely unspoilt and not densely populated - therefore, at night you have a gloriously clear view of the stars. Other highlights of a sailing trip in the Kornati include the beautiful sunsets, and outdoor activities that are possible such as hiking, snorkeling, and diving - enabling you to forget your everyday life and immerse yourself into the area’s nature.
The scenic beauty of the Kornati region can be characterised by the so-called Kornati crowns. These are steep rock walls that protect the archipelago from the open sea. They are characteristic of the landscape, and it is believed that the Kornati also got their name from their crowns. The cliffs rise far out of the water, some of which rise out of from the seafloor and stand at over 100 meters.
The Telascica Park is located in the southern part of the island of Dugi Otok. The area has been declared a nature reserve because of its unique natural features - a place that is definitely worth a visit during your sailing holiday. In the park you can explore countless small bays and swim in the saltwater lake Mir. This is only separated from the open sea by a steep rock wall and the water of the lake. In addition to its natural beauty, in Telascica you can discover Illyrian ruins and the remains of old fishing villages and churches.
Sailing in the Kornati has become so popular due to its beautiful sceneries, and turquoise blue waters. One of the most striking beaches of the area is Lojena Bay. A sailing trip in Northern Dalmatia is perfect for snorkelers and sun bathers who enjoy sun and a crystal clear sea. This beach - famous for its silver sands - can only be reached by boat. It is located near the islands of Dogi Otok and Murter and is a great trip that you can discuss with your skipper.
When sailing in the Kornati Islands, you should also plan a visit to the huge Magazinova Skrila rock, which is believed to be created by an earthquake. Here is a great view over the islands of the archipelago.
All you need to know about your next cruise in the Kornati archipelago aboard a sailboat.
The best time for a sailing trip around the Kornati is between the months of April and October. The climate is warm and dry, and the winds are mild. The peak season is from June to the end of August. Those who want to enjoy the nature of the archipelago with a little more peace and quiet should consider sailing between April and May or September and October.
Croatia has a well developed marine infrastructure and offers a wide range of sailing opportunities. The distances are usually not too long and therefore are also suitable for families and beginners. In addition, Croatia remains a relatively inexpensive sailing area. €400 per person can be enough to come on board for one week.
If you want to fully enjoy your sailing holiday in the Kornati in the best conditions, we recommend that you go choose a trip with a local skipper. Travelling with a skipper who has insider knowledge on the area, allows travellers to fully immerse in the pleasure and relaxation of the holiday. Where individuals on the trip wish to learn or practice their sailing skills, skippers will be there to integrate travellers into the responsibilities onboard.
A one-week sailing trip can be a perfect for certain itineraries when exploring the Kornati archipelago. Your holiday starts from Zadar, where you can then move onto Božava and subsequently sail on to Dugi Otok. On the "long island" you have to explore the nature reserve Telašćica. Swim in the unique salt lake of Mir and hike through olive groves, fig plantations, and pine forests. Then, move onto the Vrulja on the island Kornat and Piškera. You finish your sailing trip in the charming Žut and sail back to Zadar.
You start your sailing trip in Šibenik and sail towards Zlarin. Next, continue to Kaprije and then to the island of Kornati. From here you continue to Dugi Otok and discover the Telašćica bay. Via Murter you pass Pasman to Zadar, where your trip ends.
