Brief description of the holiday
Is there an ideal cruise?
If the answer is yes this is what you can do with us in the Aeolian Islands , where every day is a discovery and where we spent unforgettable moments.
We never wanted to have a fixed itinerary, wandering through the seven wind-driven islands and based on the best riders. And it is a good recommendation, in a single week it is not easy to visit them all, unless you want to surf only without stopping to drink the "essence" of the islands. Leaving some of them out will be the excuse to come back , because the Aeolian islands will stay inside with their sea, their landscapes, their perfumes and their food.
Starting from Palermo we have always preferred a stop but Cefalù , where you see the Duomo when you pass Termini Imerese , across the Fiat factory.
The bay is convenient if there is no grecale, the piers a bit 'far from the village but 500 meters walk open the appetite and after visiting the cathedral and the Roman wash a meal of fish is a must, except that You want to experience the atmosphere of the Dutch, a bistro in the heart of Cefalù with all kinds of delicacies.
From Cefalù we leave Alicudi to the left and we aim at Filicudi, eight hours of navigation and if the wind comes from the south it's a hoot .
The dolphins will keep us company! Filicudi is not very populated, fishermen and VIPs looking for peace. The village is small, the roads climb and the sea is transparent. A reed bath at sunset and then at anchor in Pecorini, the village where you think you have arrived in Puerto Escondido , transformed into a great gastronomic buffet with Sicilian specialties.
To leave early is not a duty from Filicudi, Salina (the island of Postino) is there a few miles, we get to the bathroom, perhaps in Pollara , where Pablo Neruda lived.
Going up you can visit the poet's house. The docking at Santa Marina is convenient, because here - if you want - there is the best port of the Aeolian Islands.
Then you go down to the ground and you do not want to go any further, Salina is a fresco , all refurbishing, buy the fish at the port an emotion, the granita from Alfredo a magical ritual. The island requires a complete circumnavigation or a visit by renting a scooter or a quod, think: five villages climbed in the mountains, from where the archipelago is dominated. From Salina to Lipari you can also swim and the first obligatory stop on the largest island of the Aeolian is the pumice quarries. They have been closed for years, but the sea has remained white, a show perhaps only possible in the Maldives .
Immersing gives a unique feeling, the best way to approach the country. Mooring at Pignataro is easy, still under the suggestive castle and we often preferred it because closer to the center. Then a jump inside the nightlife of Lipari, including shops, restaurants (renowned the Filipino but the choice is vast) and a lush flora. You can go late to Lipari, because the music on the course continues until almost dawn. And we must choose. Better not to exceed, so as not to get lost the day after a swim in the faraglioni, which face Vulcan in the face.
A stop in Vulcano must be done, if only to feel the thrill of plunging into the mud, the smell is not the best but then the skin looks like velvet. A bath in Cala Formaggio or Mulberry with its black sands can not be skipped. Wanting to attend the Sciara, or the fire flow of the Stromboli, it is necessary to leave early from Vulcano.
On the street a bath in Panarea (which deserves a serious reflection on nightlife for those who love to mix with the VIPs) in Cala Junco or the islet of Lisca Bianca and then north to get to Stromboli at sunset. And in Stromboli, on the last night of our tour, you do not sleep. A bath in Strombolicchio where the water looks like ink and goes on the north side, waiting for the red lava flow that leaves us breathless, sliding towards the sea from the crater.
And it is late, returning to port (so to speak) does not make sense and then you just have to point south for a return that will not be short (about 80 miles) but that will pass gently, among the memories lived in those few days and the hope of being able to return next year, because it will be clear to all that we have seen only a small part of the Aeolian Islands .
