Saronic Islands and Athens area
Greece
Travellers of all ages are welcome!
This holiday has already taken place!
Have a look at similar experiences to "Discover the beautiful Saronic islands on a sailing yacht"!
For this year: I make 200 euros of
reduction by people who do not participate (based on a starting
price for 8 people). So for example if there are only 2 people, it
would make them 1200 euros of reduction on the price of based. Not
bad is not it? :)
Welcome onboard !
Starting from Athens, I will be delighted to welcome you on board
my sailing boat and make you discover the magic of the Saronic
Islands. After sailing the Greek waters for 10 years, I know
for sure that the Saronic Islands are the most appreciated, both
for their accessibility (Athens International Airport) and for
their relaxing sailing conditions. Unlike the Cyclades, the area is
both sheltered from the prevailing wind and waves. Sailing between
the islands is really pleasant. To me, the Saronic has proved so
far the perfect balance sailing holiday-makers are seeking. Remote
coves and cultural sightseeing, in breathtaking landscapes.
What is a typical day on board like ?
In the morning, after breakfast, we go shopping for fresh supplies
for lunch ... Then we set sails for a wild anchorage where we spend
the beginning of the afternoon. On the program, relaxation,
swimming, reading and getting lunch ready all together... Departure
time is set by the rise of the afternoon breeze. We then set sail
for an exciting time sailing to the next village where we stop for
the night.
Here below is my typical route in the Argo-Saronic islands
and the Peloponnese coast. This route is preset for shared
booking. For private charters (in case you book the whole
boat for yourself/your party), we can plan a taylor-made itinerary
together. We can even contemplate heading to the Cyclades islands,
providing weather conditions allow it.
Sunday morning:
Departure from Athens sailing to Hydra, the island called
"the island without a car", where people still move around
riding donkeys. This magnificent village is an ancient
corsair rendez-vous and one of the most beautiful in Greece. Its
stone mansions and their well-preserved tile roofs offer wonderful
sightseeing as well as a large range of restaurants and shops. For
nightlife lovers, there are also a few trendy bars where one
can have a drink and dance the night away. Hydra, the island that
meets each and everyone’s expectations!
Monday evening:
Leonidio Very different stopover, this small port located in a
mountainous landscape and its village are really quiet. Beach and
swimming enthusiasts will find their groove as well, before heading
up into the valley to the old village. There, a very good tavern
serves among other specialties, delicious lamb chops with
home-grown organic vegetables, in the dramatic scenery of the
vertiginous cliffs.
Tuesday evening:
Wild anchorage on Dokos Island (BBQ evening and night under the
stars).
Wednesday evening:
The island of Poros also has its old charming corsair village, in a
wooded setting. A very popular stopover, with shops and a good
variety of taverns and restaurants, not to mention bars and clubs
for party goers.
Thursday night:
Epidavros, a cultural stopover, with the inevitable visit of the
exceptionally well preserved amphitheater dating back to the 4th
century BC. It is probably the most beautiful Greek theater of the
time. The place, located on the hills of Argolis was
originally the Aesculapius, deity of Medicine’s sanctuary .
Aesculapius could cure patients during their sleep, or manifested
himself in dreams interpreted by priests who treated them.
Return to departure base on Friday afternoon.
Just over 50ft in length, my sailboat can accommodate up to 8 guests in 4 double cabins, each one with its own en-suite bathroom. Unlike most other 50 footers, the Dufour 51 offers proper crew sleeping quarters for the skipper and crew, if any, which means you do not have to share your own bathroom with the skipper / crew.

What's included:
- Bedding, blankets and towels
- The HB engine of the Annex
- Kayaking
- One mask and snorkel per person
For a sailing cruise to be successful, it must remain
simple. It is very important to plan it before leaving of
course, but setting too rigid a route might not meet the crew’s
individual expectations. The best days at sea are rather planned in
the morning at breakfast.
Organization on board (Who cooks? How about shopping?)
I usually do not cook and shopping can be delivered, but I always
advise my crews to do their shopping on their own, which
avoids disappointment. It is important to buy essential supplies on
the very first day, for fresh food the islands are well stocked.
For shared cruises, a kitty allows each guest to share shopping
expenses such as food, port fees, water supply and refuelling at
the end of the trip. To keep the share fair, each guest purchases
his/her drinks separately. Keep in mind that the skipper's food is
your responsibility.
For private cruises where the entire boat is rented, I would like
to let you know that Cecilia, my teammate, will occasionaly come
along. Cecilia is a Swedish student dentist (with a fun
personality) who will me a hand for maneuvers and be involved in
general life on board. However she is neither cook nor
hostess.
Access meeting point :
Your sailing boat is usually based in Alimos Marina in Athens. From
Athens Venizelos airport, you can either catch a taxi (costs around
40-50 euros) or take the shuttle bus X96 (that runs every 30
minutes 24 hours a day, just ouside the arrival terminal) for a
journey duration that is about 50 minutes and costs 6 euros per
person.
Useful information:
- Choose soft luggage as storage space on board is
limited.
- Do not forget that shoes used outside are not allowed on
the boat. In case you wish to wear shoes on board, consider
bringing a pair that you will only wear on board the boat. They
should be soft and with light soles.
- Remember to bring a fleece and a waterproof top, as night
can be little chilly. Rain is scarce in summer but as Greece is a
mountainous country, a raincloud can exceptionally break out.
- The possession of weapons and narcotics (even "joints") is
strictly prohibited in Greece and punishable by imprisonment.
Controls are frequent.
- Smoking on board the boat is not allowed.
- Pets are not allowed on board (sorry about
that).
For more information, feel free to get in touch and I will be happy
to answer you (I am more likely to answer in the morning or
in the evening).
See you soon,
Istvan
