From Hamble to La Rochelle – 425 nautical miles of open sea experience


This offshore passage is the first leg of our European Mile Builder series, designed for those looking to gain real offshore sailing experience, log miles, and build confidence at sea. Departing from Hamble, on England’s south coast, we’ll cross the English Channel and sail down the French Atlantic coast to La Rochelle, covering around 425 NM.


Our Mile Building passages are ideal for sailors aiming to take their skills to the next level—whether preparing for RYA Yachtmaster Offshore/Ocean certification, or simply looking to expand their experience and confidence as skipper on longer passages.


Each leg is led by a professional instructor ready to offer guidance, answer questions, and support your development onboard. These trips combine hands-on learning with the excitement of offshore sailing, offering a cost-effective and enriching way to progress.


Please note: schedules may shift due to weather or unforeseen conditions. Flexibility is part of the offshore experience.

Leg 1: UK to France - Hamble to La Rochelle


This leg takes us from Hamble, one of the UK’s key sailing hubs, across the English Channel and along the French Atlantic coast to the vibrant port city of La Rochelle. The route spans approximately 425 nautical miles and includes a mix of offshore and coastal navigation.


You’ll experience open sea sailing, tidal planning, watchkeeping systems, and night navigation-perfect conditions to strengthen your seamanship.

The itinerary may be subject to changes due to weather conditions and/or technical or logistical reasons, in order to ensure safety and a pleasant sailing experience for all participants.

Very skilled captain and good ambiance crew However: -state /cleanliness of the boat nok for me, really not maintained enough -no wind=> no sail, nearly only motoring: maybe better to find another formula to allow for more saling? or clearly indicate that it is possible that there is no sailing

Great group, good skipper. The course was completely with the wind in our sails. The boat would need a little adjustment, but in general an excellent experience if you want to increase your preparation especially in night offshore navigation.
