Aeolian Islands: into the wild sea

Aeolian Islands are a must see for every sailor. According to a legend the Greek master and ruler of winds, Aeolous gave his name to this archipelago: he is that one that answer your pray to reach this enchanting sailing area in Italy and if there is not wind on the water, alone, you can’t do much about it, right? Anyway, every island has its unique characteristics and surprises, so pay attention to each one and obey to the Captain’s orders: help him/her to set the sails hoping that the breeze will accompany you during this sailing holiday and above all relax by the water’s edge.

In this regard we have forgotten to say that on the Aeolian Islands the volcanoes are not all active, apart Stromboli, where the volcano erupts in the dark and is not to be missed! You can anchor in front of the main town on the NE and you can go very close because of the great deep of the water. It is an incredible and very little island with a nice fishing village with few inhabitants. If you have forgotten to provide the galley you can enjoy the show and have a nice pizza or a “spaghetti alla strombolana” at the Observatory restaurant (don’t worry there you will be safe).

Panarea instead is less adventurous, after a group of rocks, things will have quietened down and the girls will be happy: this is a shopping paradise with wonderful boutiques but also astonishing beautiful with its pretty houses and villas. The beach Calcara, rich in colors and shades, where the locals think that there is the entrance to the Underworld, deserves a visit before the evening and a cocktail at the dock to be tasted with delicious snacks.

Lipari, an area of almost 37 square kilometers is the largest island and a safe place for the sailboat on the North and the East, its coast is wild and rocky. The charming town constructed during the Norman-era is really interesting as well as the popular Ponente beach. But it’s time for a warm mud bath and to swim above bubbling mid-sea fumaroles for a regenerating holiday!

Then before it gets too hot you need to go to Vulcano to do that. Its pretty town center has few facilities but all that you need. There are also several anchorages but the bottom the sea is rocky.

Salina is the greenest of the Aeolian Islands and has some chic shops, very fine restaurants and an excellent wine! If you love to climb Mount Fossa is the highest mountain in the surroundings.

Last but not the least Filicudi and Alicudi: the first one is protected from the wind but is the good place for scuba diving and the second one has a fairly anchorage on the North. Alicudi is the wildest of the Aeolian Islands, rich in paths and secrets corners.
