Brief description of the holiday
Del Ionio, Corfu is the northernmost of the major islands, the second by extension and by far the most cosmopolitan. It boasts a millenary history, from the ancient Hellenic civilizations to the dominion of the Roman Empire.
In modern times the Serenissima Republic of Venice controlled the island for about four centuries, leaving obvious signs in architecture, language and culture. Subsequently annexed by Napoleon, Corfu was then a British protectorate until 1863.
Not only quiet beaches and coves in summer but also churches, museums and fortresses to visit. The historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site , a maze of narrow paved streets that open up into a myriad of small squares with characteristic little restaurants and shops. Corfu offers the best of itself in low season and Orthodox Easter is celebrated with celebrations famous throughout Greece.
The week includes a visit to the wonderful island of Paxos and the return to Corfu for Easter.
